Fire TV smart TVs from various brands follow the same steps.

Step by step

From a fresh stick to your first channel

  1. Step 1

    Update the stick

Settings, My Fire TV, About, Check for updates. Install anything waiting; updates fix bugs that cause playback problems.

  2. Step 2

    Install Downloader

Use the search on the home screen to find "Downloader" in the Appstore, and install it.

  3. Step 3

    Turn on Developer options

Go to Settings, My Fire TV, About and select your device name seven times until it says you are a developer. Then open Developer options, Install unknown apps, and switch Downloader on.

  4. Step 4

    Install the player

Open Downloader, enter the address or code we send you, install the player, and choose Delete when asked about the installer file.

  5. Step 5

Open the player, add a playlist with an Xtream Codes login and enter your details exactly as sent.

  6. Step 6

Set up favorites and the guide

Add your most-watched channels to favorites and let the TV guide finish loading.

  7. Step 7

Put the player on your home row

Open your apps, highlight the player, press the menu button on the remote and choose Move to front.

Performance

Keep your Fire Stick fast

A few habits keep a Fire TV Stick quick, especially during long sports evenings.

  • Add an Ethernet adapter

An Ethernet adapter made for Fire TV plugs in alongside the power cable and gives you a wired connection.

  • Use the HDMI extender

It moves the stick away from the back of the TV, which helps with heat and Wi-Fi reception.

  • Restart weekly

Settings, My Fire TV, Restart. It clears memory and fixes many slowdowns.

  • Keep storage free

Settings, Applications, Manage installed applications: remove what you do not use.

Fire Stick questions

Questions about the Fire TV Stick

On recent Fire TV software they are hidden. Go to Settings, My Fire TV, About and select your device name seven times; Developer options then appears in the My Fire TV menu.

Delete installer files and apps you no longer use, and clear the cache of large apps in Settings, Applications. Avoid clearing the player's data unless we suggest it.

Replace the batteries, then hold the Home button for about ten seconds to pair the remote again. Unplugging the stick for a minute can also help.

For most living rooms a 4K model is the sweet spot. Choose the 4K Max for big screens and quicker menus, or the Cube if you want a built-in Ethernet port.
